Very enjoyable story of forty-something widow and her struggle to finish building the country home her husband started before his untimely death from cancer. I found it interesting that, dispite what we have been led to believe about stay-at-home mothers being the norm in the 1950's, most of the women featured throughout this true story held paying jobs at some point or other. Not only that, they worked daily alongside their farmer-husbands in keeping the homestead going while keeping the house shipshape. Where did we get the idea that mom only stayed in the kitchen baking pies?

This lady writes about her journey to self-reliance after her husband died in the 1950s. Before he died they moved to the country, and remodeled a barn into a house. She needed to continue the work after he died, and well as learn to take care of the place. She was a strong woman who inspired me; it wasn't a sad book.

A good memoir about an ordinary life.
