I couldn't get into this book. The hero (?) Rees is a total degenerate, mannerless and reprehensible. What an ass! His wife Helena obviously has the patience of a saint to put up with his crap for 10 years. Rees kicked her out and moved a slut into her house and her bed. Ten years later Helena wants a divorce and he refuses to give it to her since they have a perfect relationship. Huh??? Anyway, I gave up after only 30 pages or so. Just couldn't stand this idiot and wasn't wasting any more time on this jerk.

Definitely not your typical romance storyline. They have been married for 10 years but living apart for 9. Neither is made out to be a great lover. He was unfaithful during those years. And their fist intimacy in the book is definitely a "wham, bam, thank you, ma'am" encounter - actually there was no thank you involved. But having said all that, I think this was my favorite in the series.

While the characters are well fleshed out, Rees and Helene (especially her shrewish behavior in the beginning) aren't particularly likable characters. What really drives this story are the supporting characters and their stories. The Lina/Tom story was off-putting; this was not my favorite story in the series, and I'm glad I've already read Mayne's story or else I'd feel like I wasted an evening reading this.

Regency romance- Helene Godwin has been estranged from her husband, Rees, Earl Godwin, for 10 years.
She decides to spice up her life & live it wickedly

thus was an amusing lark using the regency era opera and composing world as its backdrop.

She wants to shock her husband into noticing her. She sets out to tempt and bewitch and succeeds in getting his attention in more ways than one. Excellent dialogue and a fast paced plot. Incredible love scenes. A gem of a Regency.

This story of three lady friends, other books in the series, A Wild Pursuit and Fool for love. All steamy and great romp plus Ms. James is a witty writer.

Just loved this one. Another historical romance novel. Very amusing and heartfelt.

The final book in the Duchess Quartet. A lot of people didn't like this book because there was adultery in it, but I think it added to the seriousness of the main couple's problems rather than detracting from the book. I really enjoyed seeing the couple grow and get to know each other again....I found the book highly satisfying. I recommend the entire series, but I recommend they be read in order.

I got to about 1/3 of the book. Both characters were horrible people but especially Rees. Talk about self-absorbed and being inconsiderate of others. On top of that, I have no idea why he had such a big chip on his shoulders. Was it the daddy issue or just because he was bad in bed?

I was starting to like Helene until she agreed to move back into the house with Rees's mistress. It made her pathetic and Rees was beyond a total a-hole for threatening to leave her penniless if she didn't do as he wants. I don't know how any woman would be able to forgive a man for taking such advantage of that situation, nevermind letting him father a child. Who would want those genes? Helene should have just adopted or bought a child off the streets.

So after that I couldn't go on with the book. I didn't like any of the characters and really could have care less what would happen to them. Total waste of time. It wasn't even funny. It just made me depressed and angry.

Helene, the Countess Godwin, knows there is nothing more tedious than a virtuous woman. Aftger all, she's been one for ten long years while her scoundrel of a husband causes scandal after scandal. So she decides it's time for a change.

The abrupt about-face that Helene and Rees make in regards to their relationship (both sexual and emotional) is a but unbelieveable. After saying such hurtful and terrible things in their marriage, and living apart for 9 years...they sure seemed to fall back into it all pretty quickly. How did so much change so quickly after 9 years of not speaking?

Other than that, as usual, I loved Eloisa's story. Mayne beggs his own story!

Definitely a different kinda storyline that is for sure.
Had everything going on-mistress, wife, family problems, good friends, lies, hurt feelings, sassy talk, small child, relatives come to visit, rakes, rumors and bad manners.

Kinda refreshing to read about all this going on and everyone comes away happy in the end.
