The back cover says "Writing with a fondness ... Mahoney vividly portrays a still-superstitious, class-ridden country belatedly stumbling into modernity." I wonder, as off-shore jobs have come to Ireland how much it has changed. In any case, this is a wonderful read of Rosemary Mahoneys' beautiful writing.

Mahoney's in-depth study of her subject is striking and she captures a part of Irish culture that exists on an almost sub-terrainean level.
