Every thinking Christian has to answer the very difficult question: Where is God when it hurts? Or more to the point: Why would a loving God allow pain and suffering? These questions have echoed down through the ages with few satisfying answers, and atheists often use the question as a kind of trump card to dispel faith. But Yancy takes on the question with surprising frankness. There are no glib platitudes here, but rather a deep and thoughtful look into problem and possible clues into a better understanding of the factors involved. No, Virginia, there is no quick and easy answer to the question of pain, but there is a kind of satisfaction that can be found in a better understanding of the problem and a bit more faith in the God who allows it.

From the back cover:

Why, in a world of love, is there so much pain? Is pain God's big mistake? Is there a message behind the suffering? Where is God when it hurts?

Here is a true inspirational classic, a revealing, loving, and powerful book that deals realistically with crises of pain and suffering in all our lives. Philip Yancey takes us into his own life and others' lives to witness what few of us have ever seen: the true purpose of pain. Using examples from the Bible and the spiritual experiences of lifetimes, WHERE IS GOD WHEN IT HURTS? frees us from fear and opens new doors of understanding and hope.

"A classic.... It probes aspects of pain that C.S. Lewis never touches and draws upon the lives of suffering saints from John Donne to Joni Eareckson."
-William J. Petersen, ETERNITY

"I've read everything I can get my hands on about the problem of pain and evil, and this book is the clearest, most practical thing I've read."
-Keith Miller

"By the time you get to the end of these chapters your heart is crying out, 'Thank you, God, for pain!'"
-Paul Harvey News

"What a book. A masterpiece."
-Jerry Jenkins, MOODY MONTHLY

I just finished this great book titled, WHERE IS GOD WHEN IT HURTS, by Philip Yancey and recommend it to you asap. It is a 4.9 out of 5. This book does a very good job at building ones faith in God while attempting to alleviate psychological pain associated with the confusion of why God allows those He loves to suffer and die. He defines the structures set in place by God for sensation and the nervous system and it is mind boggling to read about the intricacies and wonderment of Gods human design for touch and sensation. While explaining the marvelous system by which we are given pain he leads you to understand that without this system our bodies would be unfeeling and shows us what they would look like also should we be free of the nervous system. This is not a new approach but it bears much repeating so that we all better understand that not all pain is bad nor useless. When he is done with his explanation of why pain is important you have a better appreciation for pain altogether.
He tells stories of real people who have and are enduring unbelievable suffering and pain but physical and psychological and through their experiences the reader is brought new levels of humanity that ties us together as human beings that need one another. The conclusion in part 3 titled, HOW CAN WE COPE WITH PAIN, is the apex of the book and I think he does a very good job at helping anyone who is suffering to feel less anxiety associated with the gnawing questions such as the whys, the hows, the what now's, they might be facing and yet does not fully take away the lea way to get in ones own touch with their personal conflicts and rationales.
The pages that jumped out to me are the following:
Page 23 Trying to re-invent pain
Page 29 Last four para's
Page 41 Quote by George Wald
Page 72 whole page
Page 75 last par.
Page 86 Par. 3 Pain turned you to God
Page 92 Par. 2 Absolute evil does exist
Pages that wrapped book up for conclusions for me are : Pages 161,162, 169 and lastly pages 182 & 183

Explores the many baffling and difficult issues surrounding the mystery of pain, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. This book helps us to understand why we suffer and how to cope with our own pain as well as how to help other cope with theirs.

If you are in chronic pain and suffering, this book will depress you and leave you feeling hopeless. Do yourself a big favor and don't read it. The author has never personally dealt with what we have dealt with. It is HORRIBLE.
