I felt like I might have been a bit biased before even starting this book. I love dragons! I have had a thing for dragons ever since I was a child. I used to constantly wish upon a star for someone/something to bring me my own dragon. I still secretly wish it as an adult. So I just knew I was going to love this book before I even started it, and I did! Just the idea of being able to turn into a dragon was thrilling. Then reading about it and all of the beautiful types of dragons out there just gave me chills. I so want to be a dragon...lol.
This story had more to it than that though. It was a very feministic read. Although, I wouldn't call myself a hardcore feminist, I do believe in equal rights and the power/magic that women have. But, it was even more than that. It had trauma, love, loss, friendship, power and so much more. The whole thing was just so beautiful. So nicely done and I find myself not able to fully put it into words. My heart ached from all the feels once it was done. My favorite characters, Aunt Marla and Beatrice, were the kind of women/dragons I'd love to hang out with. I did struggle a bit with Alex, who is our main character. I liked her at first but then I had a hard time relating to her. Also, her mother seemed to be uncaring and cross. I didn't really care for her. She was rude to her sister and callous to the kids. Then later in the book, Alex keeps talking about how great she was. I didn't see that myself but maybe I was missing something?? It doesn't take away from the story though. It was a delightful book that will stay in my heart for a long time.
