Story from the journal of a young woman who joined a wagon train in OH as a couple's maid/babysitter to escape her horrible home life and start over in California. Hers was one of several wagons in a group taking a 'short-cut', including that of the Donners, that was severely delayed by blizzard conditions. Well-written but grim tale with realistic characters.
