Love and life do not follow a timetable or a script. They happen whether we are ready for them or not. The main character in this book has to deal with those unpredictable circumstances when his wife -- the love of his life -- dies shortly after giving birth to their son and briefly after their teenage daughter ran away to parts unknown. As if all of this isn't too much for any one person to handle, into his life also comes love and a new relationship in the form of a co-worker. So while he learns how to cope with being the single parent of a baby, and tries to make sense of his daughter's disappearance and her cryptic messages from the road, deals with the aching loss of his wife, he also finds himself both drawn to and guilty over the new relationship that flowers through it all. Dealing with all of these emotions and the turmoil in his life, tests the sense and sensibility of the main character and yet also reveals how the loss of one love does not mean the end of all love and how love has its way of saving us, if only we can and will let it. This is a great read for anyone who has ever dealt with loss and love in such ways, and even for those of us who have not, at least not yet.
