Damien Vryce, priest/sorceror of the One God, sets out once again to root out the evil that has taken root in Erna, a settlement of Earth. He takes with him a member of the native intelligent species and a being who is as much demon as he is man. They cross a treacherous sea to find a world where Damien's One God seems to have created Paradise... but there are cracks in Paradise which only Damien and his companions can see. A long journey through the land that suddenly turns on them brings them in contact with new companions. When they reach the end of their journey, however, one companion has betrayed Damien, and another has died, leaving him hopeless. But help comes from unexpected places...
This is a very depressing book, but it is well written, and Friedman has a wonderful ability to make up new creatures and new dangers for the hero to face. Definitely worth a read if you've read Black Sun Rising.

Really liked this trilogy. The concept of fighting evil with evil made for a really interesting story. Turned out the evil sorceror Tarrant was my favorite character. Go figure! lol

Part of one of the most brilliant series ever written. C.S. Friedman is an awesome writer. I have reread this series at least once, usually twice every year for the past ten years. It is one of the best works out there. This is the second book in the series and i'm only posting it because I finally unearthed a hardcover copy to replace it.
