I haven't read the other books in the Mama Lou series, but that didn't stop me from enjoying this book. This can be a stand alone book. The story is set in Washington D.C. He's a Senator from California. She's a nurse with an interest in geriatric care. They meet under some unique circumstances. The hero and heroine have sizzling chemistry. I fell in love with both characters. She's strong without being overly aggressive, but she's also sweet without being a doormat. He's not only good-looking, but an extremely intelligent and honorable man. He's also refreshingly normal and not an uber alpha male who wants to dominate her. It's a breath of fresh air to read a story where the the two aren't fighting their attraction, acting dumb or creating some big misunderstanding that could be easily resolved. Their story is believable. It's not contrived. They both seem like two people who would exist in the real world, not just in the pages of a romantic novel.
The author has a knack for snappy witty dialog. It's nice not to have to read cheesy, corny dialog. I loved the fact that sometimes an entire page of When Love Calls is just dialog. That's a great way to move the story forward. The author clearly understands a good author needs to show not tell.
