When Early AAs Were Cured and Why, Second Edition
When Early AAs Were Cured and Why Second Edition Author:Dick B. For the first decade of Alcoholics Anonymous, every AA pioneer proclaimed that he or she had been cured of alcoholism. This was the case with A.A. co-founder Bill Wilson, with A.A Number Three Bill Dotson, and with A.A.'s co-founder Dr. Bob. There are literally hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles extolling the A.A. success factors and cu... more »res. This title by Dick B. tells the whole story. It explains what "cure" means and meant. It explains how and why AAs were cured. And it shows the corruption of that fact and record by two erroneous phrases inserted by Wilson in the Big Book to the effect that "once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic" and "we are never cured of alcoholism." Later A.A. publications jumped on the bandwagon as did therapists, treatment centers, and meeting jabber. But the miracle of A.A. was that, by reliance on the Creator, AAs were cured. This was never meant to say that they could not be tempted and cave in to that temptation. The program of recovery mandated abstinence, abstinence for good, recognizing and resisting temptation, seeking God's guidance and strength, and taking all measures to do God'w will, help His kids, and fellowship with believers. The book is chock full of details as to how the early Akron A.A. program worked, where it came from, and why its adherents could confidently say they would never drink again. And among those who tried, they did not. The title deals outspokenly, effectively, and in depth with these points, among others: (1)How the original Yale School of Alcohol Studies made clear the effectiveness of Christian principles in assuring recovery; (2)the spiritual origins of A.A. and how Wilson's lack of believing, lack of church affiliation, lack of Bible knowledge, and lack of Christian conviction led him to depart from the early program and fashion his Steps and Big Book on the teachings of Rev. Sam Shoemaker without the power-of-God convictions Shoemaker had taught him. (3) The Akron crucible where the power of God was brought to bear with miracles resulting. (4) The problem for AAs and recovery people today from letting the "goofy gods" into their program. (5) The challenge that the assistance and miracles of the Creator are not myths, but documented healings. Appendices spell out the Creator's name Yahweh, the teachings of Rev. Sam Shoemaker, miraculous healings throughout the ages, and the assurance from pioneers that alcoholism could be cured.« less
