I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I had read several bad reviews, some even saying they couldn't finish reading it. I actually found it a step above a lot of other paranormal books I've been reading lately. Sure, it wasn't great literature, but I'd say it had a little more depth to it compared to the last book I read "A Charmed Death". I'd say "When Darkness Comes" is two-demensional as opposed to Damsgaards one dimension. I was really into the first half of the book. The second half became extremely confusing for me. The author was mixing vampires, humans, shallots, wizards, demons, etc etc..I couldn't always keep track of what was what and who was who. A vampire is a demon and a wizard is a human but magical....ok...
At the end of the book, there was the first chapter of the next book in the trilogy, and it looks really interesting.....something about the demon slave trade. I'd be interested in reading the second book.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one. The witty sarcasm from the heroine made me laugh out loud many times (reminded me of myself). And Dante is quite delicious! Enjoy!

Wallbanger, I didn't finish it. The author sounds junior high school, and the dialoge reads like sibling squables.

Reading the backcover, it looked promising. Unlike other paranormal books I've read, this was not a "I need to finish it now". I read a couple of other books in between this story. The story just plodded along. It was not a page turner.

I think this is Ms Ivy's first book. I'm not in a hurry to read the next book nor buy it.

The heroine is annoying enough that the uninspired plot isn't worth the effort. The hero is interesting, though. I may check this author out later.

It was good. Not a 'keeper' but I'll be watching out for the following books.

When Darkness Comes wasn't a book I 'couldn't put down'. It took me about a week to finish it, but I'm glad I did.

Anway, I enjoyed it.

Hope you do too!

I was pleasantly surprised by When Darkness Comes by Alexandra Ivy which is the first book in her Guardians of Eternity series.

Ivy has woven a very compelling story. The writing is well done and fast paced. The book starts with a bang. There is a bit of uneven pacing toward the middle of the book but it's not overly obvious. I polished this book off in a single day.

The characters are well written with an undeniable chemistry between Dante and Abby. Abby is very funny and Dante is sarcastic. The banter between the pair really brings them to life and is refreshing, more like two people on the first few dates rather than ancient warrior and unwilling heroine. Though I could have done without the constant reminders of Abby's terrible childhood. The secondary characters are well fleshed out, not two-dimensional, with motivations explained. Her setting descriptions are just the right amount to keep you in the story.

I'm looking forward to reading the next books in this series: #2 Embrace the Darkness, #3 Darkness Everlasting, and #4 Darkness Revealed.

I've read both this book and Embrace the Darkness (book 2 of the series). Ivy is a good addition to your para/rom writer list if you've exhausted the bestsellers (no offense to the writer I just found her a little later in the game). I found both books equally entertaining but by the time I read Embrace I'd worked out more of the relationships of vampires to demons to fairies etc that I could enjoy the characters more, rather than figuring out the bad guy/good guy scenarios.

I got three quarters of the way through this book and decided I just didn't care what happened. Bad sign. Too many good books out there to waste time on one that I'm slogging through. The plot wasn't bad but the characters were stupid.

I read this and the other three available titles in the Guardians of Eternity series. Everyone has their own preferences in paranormal romances. I prefer mine sweet, romantic, and sensitive, with less of the trash-talk, pessimism, sarcastic chick-lit one-liners, and seedy settings. This series was exactly the kind of paranormal I love. I read all four books as soon as I could get my hands on them - paid full price for new copies of the third and fourth books. This book (Dante) and Darkness Everlasting (Styx) were my favorites, and I look forward to the new book that comes out in November. I listed all four books on Sunday, have already had requests for all four, so I know I'm not the only one who thinks Alexandra Ivy is tops!

This was a good book and would recommend it to a friend. However, I did find that it was easy to put it down when I had something to do and was not compelled to pick it up every chance I had. I just didn't get sucked into their world like I have with some other series that I've read. I will read the next book in the series, Embrace the Darkness.

Great beginning of a paranormal series. This book is a nonstop chase through Chicago, where everyone/thing wants to kill you.

I really enjoyed this book! Unique plot lines in the paranormal romance genre are getting fewer and further between these days, but Alexandra Ivy succeeds in this one. I can't wait to sink my teeth into the rest of the series.

I REALLY liked this book! The characters were engaging & neither of the main characters were too perfect. The story moved at a good pace and more than once I found myself laughing out loud at the snappy dialouge. I can't remember having read Alexandra Ivy's books in the past, but I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style and sense of humor.

While she may not have the intensity of Sherrilyn Kenyon, I must say I highly recommend this book if you're looking for a quick, fun read. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I've already picked up Book #2 in this series & can't wait to get started on Viper's story!

Never Tempt Fate

It's been a hell of a day for Abby Barlow. In just a few hours, she's survived an explosion, watched her employer die, had a startling dream, and now she finds herself in a seedy Chicago hotel with the sexy, unearthly Dante, a man she both desires and fears.

For 341 years, Dante has stood as guardian to The Chalice, a mortal woman chosen to hold back the darkness. A terrible twist of fate has now made Abby that woman. Three hours ago, Dante would have used all his charms to seduce her. Now she is his to protect. And he will do so until his very death.

A terrifying plan has been set in motion, one that will plunge Dante and Abby into an epic battle between good and eviland a desperate race to save their love

I really enjoyed this book, but the pet name "lover" Dante kept calling Abby drove me nuts, it reminded me of saturday night live!!!!!

Abby unwillingly becomes the Chalice for The Phoenix, a goddess of light who keeps the forces of evil from entering our world. Dante, a vampire, is her guardian.
Really enjoyed this one and am looking forward to the next in the series.

It was a struggle to finish this book. There were some moments-really tiny ones-when it was kind of amusing. But for the most part, it's a dud.

When Abby's boss dies she becomes the new Chalice, a kind of anti-demon on earth. Dante, a vampire is the guardian of the Chalice and must now protect Abby at all costs. The two are faced with countless forces of evil who are now tracking Abby. Romance blossoms between the two.

Dante is sexy. Abby is funny-I'm not sure whether that's intentional or not, but at times it was all that made the reading bearable.

There are moments when Dante and Abby are on the run, when the whole this just comes across as silly. It struck me as a badly distorted version of Buffy. It's vague, confused, and complex. I found Ivy's writing lacking in the style and imagination necessary to keep the reader drawn in.

I bought this book thinking it was paranormal romance, and to me it seems more like vampire spoof. I'm sorry to say I will not be carrying on with this series.

I really, really wanted to like this series. I've ready two of the series (books 1 & 4), and unfortuantely, both times they've let me down. They start out strong, with a good premise, but then, splat: They fall flat for me. The relationship dynamics were just painful. Seemingly strong characters turning to mushy, sentimental, saps in 24-hours or less. Characters are cliche and lack backbone and consistency. Plots are thin at best. I ended up re-posting the rest of the series I had in my TBR pile, and cancelling the rest. There are just too many unique, fresh books out there to keep rewashing the same-old-thing.
