The story behind the book is extraordinary, but I wasn't crazy about the author's writing style. He tended to babble a bit.

This book is disturbing because an evil mudereress can get away with it for so many years and go on living her life as normal. It was written in 1995 so updates on what has happened since the trial is missing. Also, the author does not give the timing of events very well so it is hard to keep track of when different occurances happened.

This book tells one of the most disturbing stories I've read, and I've read A LOT of true crime. This mother was apparently so jealous of her daughters's youth and beauty that she beat them, forced them to prostitute themselves, and murdered them, demanding help for these deeds from her sons! This is really only half the story, as one of her three daughters survived and managed to escape her evil mother's clutches, but that was not the end of her horror. It took five years of telling her unbelievable story before someone actually believed her. If not for this brave young woman her mother may very well have gotten away with the grisly murders of two of her daughters, not to mention all the abuse she and her siblings suffered in their childhood.

Oh my, what an evil, evil woman. I think she should have gotten the death penalty. Good read, tho quite depressing.

I read this & it made me ill. Worst case of torture a "mother" could ever do. I would not treat a dog the way this woman treated her kids.

I was interested in reading this book because I used to live in the same areas that Mrs. Knorr lived when she comitted the murders. (North Sacramento and Orangevale) The story was slow to start, but once it got going, I couldnt stop. Its odd that no one thought that this woman needed psychiatric help. Everyone turns heir head. The only bad part of this true crime account is that it does not go into the livesa of the family after the mother was imprisoned. The book stops at the trial.

To neighbors, she was the brave single mother....Raising her five kids alone in a rundown section of Sacramento, Theresa Cross Knorr seemed like the ultimate survivor. But her youngest daughter, 16-year-old Terry, told police another story: one almost too terrible to believe. But accused of imprisoning her children in a house of horrors....According to Terry, Theresa-no longer the petite brunette she once was-had turned insanely jealous of her pretty eldest daughters and enlisted the help of her two teenaged sons in a vicious campaign against their sisters.Of beating, torturing and killing her own flesh and blood....Terry's gruesome tale told how Theresa had drugged, handcuffed and shot 16-year-old Suesan, allowing her wounds to fester, until the day she ordered her sons to burn their sister alive. Next, Terry said Theresa severely beat 20-year-old Sheila and then locked her in a stifling broom closet, so that when the girl finally starved to death, her brothers dumped her body in the same desolate mountain range where they had cremated Suesan. She could be one of the most evil murderesses of our time....It took Terry five agonizing years to convince authorities to investigate her grisly accounts of burning flesh, starvation and torture....of a mother from hell, so sadistic and so deranged, she had become her children's own executioner.
