I'm intrigued when mainstream media personalities talk publicly about their faith, so Mostly What God Does by Savannah Guthrie, Today show co-anchor, was a must-read. I listened to the audiobook, read by the author, while following along in a print copy. This enabled me to mark passages that were especially meaningful.

This is nonfiction, and Ms. Guthrie shares how events in her life shaped her faith, so it has elements of memoir as well. I wish the title included her entire premise: Mostly What God Does Is Love Us. If ever there was a time when people (especially in the United States) need to hear these words, it's now.

I agree with most of her beliefs except assigning male pronouns to God. I especially appreciate her insights on the oft-quoted Psalm 23. I liked that each brief chapter/essay in the audiobook concludes with 30 seconds of quiet music to signal a transition to a new topic.

I read this in October while my life was consumed by work, and it was very grounding. I hope this will reassure and/or encourage other readers.
