As other reviewers said, I kept hoping for a different ending even knowing how it was to end. After finishing her last book, I was haunted for days by the book and the ending. This is a totally different book from her usual, but equally well-done. It really puts you into a world you'd not likely even glimpse otherwise. If you've read the series, it's not a "mystery" exactly, since you know the ending but it is so gripping it's hard to re-enter your everyday life. If on the other hand, you've never read any of her other books, this is able to stand alone.
In my opinion, Ms.George is one of the finest writers we have right now.

I kept hoping things were going to change, even knowing the outcome from the start. Gripping, fantastic read. Worthy of Elizabeth George!

I'm a fan of the Lynley/Havers series and felt absolutely bereft at the end of the last book. This one provided some context -- I'm still crushed by Helen's death but now feel a tad less gypped by that plot twist!

iNTERESTING - DIFFERENT FROM HER PREVIOUS BOOKS - BUT STILL THE EXCELLENT WRITER

This is a wonderful, tragic book which has haunted me for days after reading it. Elizabeth George's writing just gets better and better. So many mysteries set in Britain are so cozy you need to keep the insulin handy; not in this series. This book tells the tale of the tragic lives of 3 orphaned children in dire poverty. From the start you know this is the boy who killed Helen Lyndley, and this just adds to the pity you feel to watch his descent from hope to despair. Highly recommended by an avid mystery reader.

Excellent! I did not want to read it b/c of the ending of the last George book.
this is so good. She gets just right a family living on the edge of falling apart and how things keep going wrong.

Please note, this book does deal with Lynley and Havers, but with characters introduced in the previous book in the series. I was disappointed, but you may enjoy the read.

This book is a departure from Elizabeth George's usual cast of characters. Barbara Havers does not appear until the last page of the story. Instead of solving a mystery, this story provides the background story about the individuals involved in the shooting that occurs at the end of her previous novel. George provides a richly detailed picture of the gloomy existence of the individuals who eventually collide with Lynley's family in the tragic shooting of his wife.

This story centers around a family of mixed race children struggling to survive the rough streets of London, where there are dangers lurking in every corner. An awesome read.

I'll give her credit for delving into the"other side" of the story, but this book did not satisfy me as much as her other novels did. I did find myself emotionally attached to some of the characters, but I still kept waiting for the part that leads back to "With No One As Witness". I had a tough time keeping up with the slang dialogue, too.

I thought this book was fantastic. I have read all of Elizabeth George's works, including her nonfiction. As always, am looking forward to her next one. I think she truly knows how to make the crime thriller a piece of literature, and keeps her characters growing as the novels progress, too.

Despite its intriguing title, this tale of hard-luck kids in the London slums of the 80s failed to engage either my interest or my emotions.

Did not care for the writing style of this author...barely made it through five pages before I put it down.
As the title says it's about what led up to the shooting of a Police Inspector's wife by a 12 year old boy.
