While I am not black or gay, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very interesting look into how emotionally difficult life was for this individual.

Really one of the better books I have read. Such a fast read as once you start it is hard to stop. Written with such passion. This man was made with heart so tender it makes you really want to cry for him. Many times throughout this novel, i wanted to just hold him and tell him things change from day to day and if i at all could make it better for him i'd pray him past the pains he suffered. {Also might have stuck a few prayers in there that his step father might --just on accident you know-- meet someone bigger than he that liked to beat on people smaller than they were}. Loved this book.
In his most daring act yet, E. Lynn Harris writes his memoir- from his childhood in Arkansas as a closeted gay boy through his struggling days as a self-published author to his rise as a New York Times best sellling author. in "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" Harris shares an extraordinary life touched by loneliness and depression, but more important, he reveals the triumphant life of a small town dreamer who was able through writing to make his dreams and more come true.
