Given the current political crap going on, this was really nice... sometimes you hear that fact is funnier than fiction, but I dunno, this was very very funny. Buckley is probably the best political satire fiction writer I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

After a bedroom fight, the First Lady allegedly hurled a spittoon at him, with tragic results, or were they? Beth is put on trial for assassinating the president. She hires "Shameless" Baylor, her former boyfriend as her attorney. As the story twists and turns it gets funnier and more entertaining. What's to become of the First Lady? Is she really the killer or has she been set-up?

This writer is among the funniest around. If making fun of lawyers gives you pleasure, this is the book for you. Buckley also wrote Thank You For Smoking, which was made into a movie. I've now read 3 of his novels, and have been delighted with all 3.
This book is a very witty satire that looks at the legal system and the media. I loved the "What if" aspect of the First Lady on trial for accidentally killing her husband after he cheated on her in the Lincoln bedroom and now being brought in the Trial of the Millennium, she has to prove that she did not assassinate the President! It reminded me not only of the Clinton error, but also the media mayhem of the O.J. Simpson trial.
Political mystery, good characterization.
This was a fun book to read with a lot of lol moments. It was basically a satire on life in Washington DC pulling no punches at the politics, sex, government agencies, the media, and especially the legal community and its attorneys. The book was written in 2002 and is obviously a takeoff on the Clinton white house. The president in this case is a former war hero who has untold dalliances with a myriad of women. One night after such an affair in the Lincoln bedroom, he returns to bed with the first lady and is found dead in the morning. But how did he die? Well, the first lady, Beth, is charged with his murder by throwing an antique silver spittoon at the president causing a brain hemorrhage. This leads to the "trial of the millennium" presided over by the only judge that was not recluded from the trial. Beth's attorney is an old lover who she was formerly engaged to named Boyce "Shameless" Baylor, who will go to any extent to win a case, legal or otherwise.
This one was really over the top and is filled with political humor and situations that could well apply to the current Trump administration. I would mildly recommend this but for me it was maybe a little too much over the top.

Typical Buckley. Very funny actually kept me up late reading with it's twists and turns. I will look forward to his next adventure.
