I really enjoyed Part I of this book. It told the story of two American girls (one white and one Japanese)in the years leading up to WWII. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese girl and her family were sent away to a prison camp and the girls were both heartbroken because of the separation. Part II jumps ahead to the mid 1960's in Mississippi and the struggle faced by Black people trying to gain equal rights. I think that Part II should have been written as a second book - a sequel. Part II dragged on and had very little to do with Part I. I feel that it made the book too long and detracted from the overall pleasure of reading this story.
