This gothic family saga turns into an interesting detective story. It is very slow-moving at times, but beautifully written.

This is an essay on history disguised as a novel. On both counts it is excellent.
I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. It's better not to read the back cover before you read the book, one of those books to go into blind. It is a mite depressing.
