In 1854, twelve-year old Wren Taylor moves west to begin a new life on the frontier in what is now Colorado. One of only a few children at a lonely outpost, Wren finds a soul mate in Luther, a blind Native Ute boy who attends school at the fort. Their secret adventures together strengthen their friendship and expose Wren to another way of living, thinking and believing. When war eventually erupts and Wren learns of a planned attack against Luther's peaceful band of Utes, she faces a wrenching decision: should she warn Luther of the impending attack or follow her father's explicit orders to remain silent? In the end, Wren makes the only decision she can live with, and undertakes a perilous journey to complete her mission.
