Be sure to read Chapter 13 The Invasion. Note that NYC had 20,000 Chinese in 1960, 300,000 in 1985 (an effect of the Immigration Act of 1965), many from Hong Kong. NYPD had few Chinese-speaking officers. Four of the fie largest tongs in 1950 had West Coast Hqs, although they rapidly became national. Triads are criminal enterprises and Hong Kong was an excellent environment for them. As also was the R of China: "The KMT and its associated tongs and triads protect their interests around the world (215)." It was not wise for Chinese abroad to be pro-Red China in postwar America.
