I loved this book what a dynamic combination of history and fiction to mix up a terrific action packed read!
The summer she turned 13, Charlotte Lange began to understand her feelings for Braedan Egan, why her stomach did a little flip whenever he came near. His strong arms meant comfort, though he knew none himself. He spent his days in the mines working. He took care of his younger brother. And he looked after Charlotte and her friends for they were all orphaned. Everything about Braedan made Charlottes passion a dam waiting to burst. But a reater peril loomed on the horizon. On May 31, 1889, Johnsown, Pa. was in for a great catastrophe from which there would be no escape. Would fate wash away what came before. All Charlotte knew was that she loved the man the boy had become. And at the end of th storm, she woulb be waiting for the rainbow.
Picked this book up in a used book store, not knowing the author's name or much about this particular period in history. I find that I am quickly bored when a story lags or an author beats me over the head with useless details. What I found with George's writing is that she is fast paced -- she seems to expect her readers to be bright enough to keep up. I was quite pleasantly surprised and found myself looking up more information about the Johnstown Flood after I finished the story.
