Excellent book. When it started I thought it was going to be depressing but it turned into a book that was great. The characters are quirky but so caring. It's a book that has sends a message about real life and how we see it relate to everything around us.

Fabulous. It reminded me of Daphne Du Maurier's "Rebecca". Deep, a little Dark, but so satisfying. Set in the 1880's, it explores what they considered mental illness and medicine. A lady comes to this hidden, dark house full of the "insane" totally without memory, or even, at the beginning, speaking. It's amazing to watch the entire household change because of this one lady. It makes you look at your life and how you view things. I almost put it down the first 1/3 of the book, because it is dark, but it had a deep hold on me, and I knew I'd always wonder what happened next. I'm so glad I finished it. It's a book I'll pass along to friends to read.

This intensely emotional story explores the issues of mental and physical disability, the thin line between reality and illusion, and the healing powers of compassion, belief, and love. Despite an obvious and sentimental ending, Hannah's beautiful use of language, compelling and empathetic characters, and ability to involve readers make this historical, with a hint of the paranormal, well worth reading.
