McDowell (Josh McDowell's One Year Book of Family Devotions, Tyndale, 1997) and Stewart (Abundant Life in Christ, Tyndale, 1996) have set their thriller in the not-so-distant future, when the northern section of California has ceded into an independent state known as North California. Running on a Christian platform pledging to legislate crime and immorality out of existence, Daniel Bellardi is campaigning to become the state's first governor. Divorced mother Stevie Van Horne decides that Bellardi's ideas are what her family needs to bring them together again, so she moves north and begins to campaign for Bellardi. When the gubernatorial candidate receives death threats, Stevie investigates, only to find her own life in danger.

From the back of the book:

"Blaming the godless culture for the loss of her son and the demise of her marriage, Stevie Van Horne leaves Los Angeles with her two children for the promise of a better life in North California. She pours herself into the campaign to elect conservative Dan Bellardi as governor to establish a safe haven where Judeo-Christian values can flourish once again.

"But North California is not the Promised Land Stevie had envisioned. Terrorist attacks and a kidnapping threaten the campaign and Bellardi's family. Stevie loses touch with her daughter, Shawna, who is being seduced by those who would lead her into the deeper "more spiritual" life of the occult. She is determined to salvage her children from this encroaching culture. But to do so she must release the past, rethink her priorities, and fully trust God for her future.

"Vote of Intolerance is a finely crafted political thriller that raises knotty questions..."

One of my favorites. A novel about politics, religion, morality, and values, and very important issues.
