Charlotte Campbell a 12 year old girl Almost drown as a small child. She learned how to swim but she still has nightmares about the Mongahela River by their home in small-town Pennsylvania. They live just outside Pittsburgh and the river is brown and the air polluted by the steel mills. Charlotte's brother older JIm who is 18 years old goes off to be in World War 2. Her dad is a tugboat owner and captain. Her Mom takes a job in a local munitions factory to help win the war. SO Charlotte and her younger brother are left alone at home. They collect metal for the war effort at their school but twice sometimes breaks into their school and steals and hides the metal. Who stole the metal and are they dangerous? Charlotte learns many new things about life; the sadness of war deaths, the poverty around her that she has not seen before, and sometimes those who seem to be your friends are not and those whom seem to be your enemies are your friends. The war changes Charlotte's life in many ways. This is a great book for any age. I would rate it 10+++. The year is 1942.
