In the Castle of Bunratty in the wesst of Ireland, Mara and her scholars are celebrating Christmas of 1519 and the new year of 1520. Mara is the Brehon of the Burren and wife of King Turlough. As festivities begin, the Brehon of Thomond's body is found while friends and relatives observe the season dancing and feasting.

Brehon Law is explained thoroughly in each chapter and the well drawn characters lend depth and authenticity to a myster of betrayal, intrigue, treachery and, of course, murder.

Mara begins investigating in an effort to discover who might wish to murder the Brehon. However, someone attacks the castle. Mara wonders if the the attack linked to the death of the Brehon. The series is a on of my favorites me and once again I enjoyed this tale, the eleventh I've read.
