Laurens Van Der Post paints the reader a full color image in his writing. He speaks of each experience with a mindful philosophic view and quite heartfelt. Often his experiences bring back memories of years gone by or fill him with further insight to his current place in life. His surroundings are felt and his insights are often "Ah-Ha" moments that I for one related to very well.
Romantic, Heartfelt with adventure and experiences. If you like Philosophy, Van Der Post is a wonderful read. This is a book that I became emotionally attached to and one that I will NOT part with. :o)

He traveled to parts then little known in the very last days of the Empire. The author became a POW of the Japanese in Java (1942) after serving in the Middle East. He was commissioned by Whitehall to visit and report on various places. His mother's family are longtime residents of South Africa.
