Set largely in Venice, most dramatically during 1938-1940, this tells the story of a young Englishwoman's tragic liaison with a high-society Venetian man, and how that clandestine relationship got unearthed after the woman's death by her grand-niece.

The story pulled me along nicely until about halfway through, when some hard-to-believe coincidences and contrivances on the part of the author made me a little disgusted with the book. But it did finish well, after all that.

A good read, but not a book to take seriously.
