From moms to marathon runners, celebrities to social activists, artists to animal rights advocates, more and more people are recognizing the benefits of vegetarianism. And the majority of vegetarians are women-life-affirming females who are health-conscious and earth friendly. Becoming a vegetarian female is a wonderufl choice; then there's the journey of learning HOW to follow such a diet to meet your specific needs.

The Vegetarian Female will tell you just what you need to know to be a healthy, well-informed vegetarian. Part One explains vegetarisanism as a diet, a movement, and a way of life. Part Two provides practical information on balancing food groups, avoiding deficiencies, and eating correctly for your particular life stage and activity level. Part Three studies specific chronic diseases that are plaguing women today, and discusses how vegetarianism can be a significant factor in preventing and treating these diseases. Amoung the illnesses dicussed are high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, obesity, and osteroporosis. Part Four is full of helpful hints and guidelines for making the transition to a completely plant-based lifestyle. To provide further help, Avery-Grant includes plenty of easy-to-read nutrition tables, a generous list of suggested cookbooks, and a useful resource directory.

The Vegetarian Female is a practical, convincing guide that will encourage and empower you. It will not teach you how to meet your nutritional needs, but will give you confidence that the vegetarian lifestyle can significantly enhance both your health and your world.

I really liked this review of the scientifically sound way to be vegetarian and if you so choose, vegan. It doesn't have recipes but lots of great food lists about how to get the nutrients you need on a vegan diet without worry. I also loved that the author has lived vegan for most of her life and loved it so much that she wrote this book to help others explore this lifestyle. I found it helped relieve any lingering doubts I had.
