Merullo is one of my favorite authors and most books of his that I've read I've give 4 to 5 stars to. He frequently writes of spiritual matters, and does so in a non-preaching way, the situations are frequently fantastical, yet, you can give yourself over to idea for the length of the book. Usually a few âwhat-ifsâ abound for a couple of days, such as golfing with the Lord, Jesus running for President, a little girl meditating on the winter prairie perhaps the latest incarnation of a great spirtual leader.

Vatican Waltz begins in Merullo's home town of Revere, MA, and the setting comes alive as we follow Cynthia through growing up in the Italian neighborhood, raised by her grandmother and immigrant father. Raised Catholic, her religion means everything to her, and after her nursing studies, she spents a good amount of time in Mass or just in prayer. She believes God is sending her a message and after much contemplation, she undertands that he is asking her to become a priest, taboo in her religion.

Up to this point the story is ok, Revere Beach enjoyable, but sometimes, the author just talks too much for me. It is when Cynthia does something so out of character that the book livens up. She goes to Italy to speak with a Cardinal, and there we finally get some intrigue, and better insight into the workings of the Catholic faith.

I really had no idea of where this story was headingâa good thing. And I never saw the ending comingâa very good thing.

Not a bad book, I'd recommend it, hoping that I didn't think more highly of it due to merely my mood.
