I read this after watching Carpenter's somewhat enjoyable film version, and I have to say that this is one of the better modern vampire novels I have ever read! Funny and Thrilling as well as original and innovative, definitely worth a look.

Much better than the James Woods movie. Vampire$ presents a modern twist on the vamp legend. Bounty hunters employed by the Vatican to stamp out the rabid, snarling, filthy creatures. No victorian costumes or Transylvania accents here. A fun read.

Excellent read....a modern day take on vampires and the bounty hunters that hunt them. Full of suspense and characters that you come to like a lot! The plot is very well thought out and the reading is easy. I found out that I would not be a very good vampire hunter as the courage it takes to do so is just not in me!

This is the book that the pop culture film Vampires by John Carpenter, starring James Woods, is based on...an excellent read for the horror enthusiast

This book is good as far as vampire books go. It's definetely more of a man's book. It's been awhile since I read it so I don't have a whole lot more I can comment on.

This book has been made into a movie from Columbia Pictures. None of this new-fangled 'Vampires are simply misunderstood' stuff. Vampires are evil creature that use humans for food. So, do you want to be food, or not? If not, what are you going to do about it?

From back cover:
Suppose there really were vampires. Dark. Stalking. Destroying. They'd have to be killed, wouldn't they? Of course they would. But what kind of fools would try to make a living at it?
From the bestselling author of the phenomenal DAW science fiction classic, Armor, comes the blood-curdling story of a dedicated group that makes a precarious living killing the undead.
"This is exciting and surprising stuff . . . a real genre bender that keeps the best elements of both." --Locus.

I read this book because I am a fan of the John Carpenter movie based on this book. This book is quite a twist on the stale vampire genre. If I had read this book before I saw the movie, I would have turned the movie off half way through in disgust. Yes the book in this case is many levels greater than the movie. I recommend this to anyone who likes or once liked the vampire genre and got a little bored or worn out from it. This one is a cut or bite above the vast majority of these types of stories. If you are a fan of the movie, read this book. If you are taking a break from vampire stories out of boredom, give this a try. Too bad Steakley is not a prolific writer. I will hunt for his small collection of I think 3 other novels after this one. Take a bite of this one, especially if you like the horror genre and a little tired of the Sookie Stackhouse-Stephanie Myer teen drivel out there, this is a book for adults.

The novel behind John Carpenter's Vampires overshadows the movie in just about every way possible. A fantastic read and well worth the time spent.

They may say they're in it for the money, but their death-defying bravado and warm malefriendships are as intense as those in any soldier-hero epic. The irrepressible, foul-mouthed, hard-drinkin' Jack Crow--decked out in high-tech chain mail and wielding a fearsome crossbow--is the leader of the bunch. He's the sort of manwho screams obscenities at the pope, and then (after a lot of booze) weeps in the pontiff's lap over the horrors he's witnessed.

Acquired this book along the line somewhere. Never read it, but I'm tired of vamps and got to clear out the bookshelves.
