This is a good read. Its a paranormal romance with an action plot, characters I enjoyed, and I loved the small-time carnival setting. My only caveat has to do with the plot. Not that THIS story wasnt good, it was excellent. The problem is that it links back to the fangers/no fangers plot from some of the earlier books which I didnt really care for. I believe this plot line started back in #11, The Immortal Hunter but this will work as a stand alone.
The hero, Marcus, is sent out by Lucian (head of the vamp cops) to find the niece who has been missing and presumed dead for several thousand years. She has surfaced working as a fortune teller known as Divine in a traveling carnival. She is believed to be a rogue, but Marcus finds her to be gentle and caring of the humans around her.
The heroine, Basha, has spent her life either being abused or on the run. (Warning, if you have abuse triggers, you might want to avoid this one. The abuse is not current but her pain lingers.) And now shes been found she will have to run again, wont she? After all, shes sure Lucian sent him to find her and probably kill her.
Of course, since this is a paranormal romance, these two turn out to be lifemates. (They actually clue into this much earlier than some of the previous books protagonists.) She has secrets to hide, he has orders to follow Drama ensues, many dangerous situations are met (including Uncle Lucian), but issues are resolved.
I thought it was a good read, although I found it darker than many of the earlier books. I love the charm and wit of the earliest books. This one is shorter on charm and longer on action than those. You could read this as a standalone.
