The Valley of Horses is the second in the great Earth's Children series. In The Valley of Horses, Jean Auel uses her thorough understanding of human nature and her powerful gift of storytelling to continue the saga of Ayla and to once again, with exquisite and accurate detail, re-create the world as it truly might have been.

The sequel to "Clan of the Cave Bear" is every bit as good as the original. The research will amaze you and the storyline will draw you in!

Clan of the Cave Bear absolutely knocked me out. I was afraid I would be dissapointed by a follow-up novel. WOW! READ THIS ONE!

"A powerful story . . . Auel is a highly imaginative writer. She humanizes prehistory and gives it immediacy and clarity." -- Chicago Sun Times

I did not like this book very much, I couldn't finish it. After the first book (which was truly awesome), I had to start this one immediately. But the nature descriptions were dragging and the sex scenes got in the way with their extreme detail, in my opinion. Even though the ending of "Clan of the Cave Bear" begged for another book, I'll look at it as a stand-alone book anyway.
second time reading this book. Amazing how much I had forgotten over the years. Wonderful series!
I have read hundreds and hundreds of books over the years, yet I have not found a single heroine that I love and identify with more than Ayla. She is breathtakingly beautiful (though she doesn't know it), courageous, smart, and a woman way ahead of her time. Having been cast out of the clan, she must travel and live alone in world where few could survive. Resourceful and strong she makes a life for herself and awaits others of her kind. Jondalar (every womans dream man) is her match and you can't help but be unreasonably happy that he has found and fallen in love with her. He teaches her that she is beautiful and desirable, and helps her to heal from the brutal rape and pain of leaving her child behind. The accuracy and detail of the landscape and spiritual beliefs, bring this story to life. The reader feels as if they are immersed in a prehistoric world and a participant in the story, instead of a bystander. The Earth Children's series gets marks that are off the chart! Jean M. Auel is in a class entirely to herself. I have read this series probably 5 or 6 times over the years and each time I pick it up, its like reading it for the first time.

I liked the book at the end but the beginning was a bit slow for me. It wasn't till 2/3rds in that the main characters even met each other!

Book 2 in the Earth's Children series will not disappoint! Mrs. Auel's attention to minute details allows you to fully understand and respect Ayla & admire her tenacity. Every bit a woman at the tender age of 17, she has lived a thousand lifetimes, yet despite her bravery, she hasn't personally experienced the joy & sheer abandon of being in love. Until Jondalar & Thonolan arrive in her valley & rock the foundation of her being, that is. She must utilize all the skill and knowledge she learned from Iza in order to keep the man of the Others alive. After fighting for her life and scraping through test after test by her powerful totem, The Cave Lion, survival and self-preservation have become second nature. Betrayed first by the family that raised her and now by the body that holds her spirit, will she have the strength & determination to keep herself and the man of the Others alive long enough to shape the future of all mankind?
I loved it,'It was magic' this is my favorit of the five books.
The protagonist's curiosity, and the fascinating research about the lives of these people keeps the story moving. This one and Book 1 are worth the time; skip the rest.

A very good book. Something for the teens. I believe it comes after the Clan of the Cave Bear.
