Victor, a sixteen year old boy, is sent by his father to care for his grandmother on a lonely island in Mobile Bay. It's 1942 and America is at war against the Germans. Suddenly Victor is fighting against the Germans, too - in Mobile Bay!

The book is set in Alabama during World War II. This the coming-of-age story of Victor, 16 years old in 1942 and too young to go to war. A charming story, beautifully written.
