This 2000 mystery is the first in a series to feature Detective Inspector Packham and Constable Mitchell. They investigate the murder of a long-time allotmenteer. The story is set in the nicer suburbs of London and the murder scene is a garden allotment. The two characters make a comic pair, with cynical pessimistic Packham suffering from manic depression and soon to be a new father Mitchell young and optimistic. The plot is cleverly woven with the parade of human types and the conclusion has a satisfying one-two punch. This series is worth a try.
