This book was enjoyable but VERY predictable. For me, this book was a typical police/detective mystery series "first" with a simple plot and a basic presentation of the characters. I thought the epilogue was an exciting head-start into the next book, and I am ready to read more in the series. I didn't think book #1 was spectacular, but it was a fun, quick, and easy read.

My first Jance book, couldn't put it down....
ok but not very suspenseful
This is the first book with the characters. My dad has read the book and I have not, but he said that it keeps you guessing and has a lot of twists and turns in the plot. THOSE are the best. KEEP READING.

"The riveting debut appearance of Seattle detective J.P. Beaumont, from the New York Times bestselling author of 'Kiss of the Bees' and 'Birds of Prey' ....'Until Proven Guilty'"
"The little girl was a treasure who should have been cherished, not murdered. She was only five - too young to die - and Homicide Detective J.P. Beaumont of the Seattle Police Department isn't going to rest until her killer pays dearly. But Beaumont's own obsessiions and demons could prove dangerous companions in a murky world of blind faith and religious fanaticism. And he is about to find that he himself is the target of a twisted passion . . . and a love that can kill"

I've been a fan of Jance for awhile now. I enjoyed this story very much. At times couldn't seem to put the book down. I will continue to read more of Jance's books.
This was the first book J.A. Jance's that I have had the pleasure of reading. Truly an amazing on the edge of your seat type of reading. You can not go wrong reading this book, or any of her other works.

Very good read, lot's of twists and turns.
I hope to read all of JP Beaumont mysteries.
good read
This is a good start to the series that both stands up in its own right and also sets things up well for other books in the series.
This series is my favorite Police Procedurals mysteries.
This book also made me want to go to Snoqualmie Falls instead of just seeing a picture of the falls on the Lodge's pancake mix in the grocery store.

A little girl is murdered, and a mysterious woman in red comes to the funeral. Both events unalterably change the life of Homicide Detective J.P. Beaumont.
The little girl was only five, much too young to die-a lost treasure who should haave been cherished, not murdered. She could have been J.P. Beaumont's kid, and the determined Seattle homicide detective won't rest until her killer pays dearly. But the hunt is leading Beaumont into a murky world of religious fantacism, and toward a beautiful, perilous obession all his own. And suddenly Beau himself is a target- because faith can be dangerous...and love can kill.
