I almost NEVER quit a book partway through, but this one was an exception to the rule, and I finally gave up about a third of the way into it. I'm not sure if i've read any of this author's other books, but this one looked good. I wanted to like it, I really did, and the first few chapters actually seemed promising. Unfortunately, that didn't last, and after that the storyline started getting bogged down in weird side narratives referencing the odd, almost incestuous relationships the various characters have with one another. The dynamics just don't make sense, and perhaps part of the oroblem is that there are simply too many characters that the author has tried to flesh out too much. The end result is rather confusing, kind of soap opera-esque (and coming from me, that is definitely not a compliment!).
