This was a very interesting account of a Civil War soldier's experience. This is a compassionate man not only for the cause but for the people he was fighting for. He explains how they lived, fought and died for the union. His unit cared for the people of the South even though they were not were not always received well. He described his experiences with the the other side at times as almost friendly.

I really loved this book. I was right there in camp with Mr.Rhodes. The plainess of his writing draws you into the day to day life of a soldier and brings an understanding of why they fought.

I find it difficult to believe that after 64 years of reading about the American Civil War, I started when I was 13, I just got around to this book. It was a delight to read. If you read it, don't forget to read the end notes. There was a lot of interesting stuff there too.
Elisha Rhodes was there from the beginning, at the first Battle of Bull Run, to the very end, at the Appomattox campaign.

An excelent accout of Rhodes service during the Civil War. So many details and stories. It is a must read for an history buff. I am reading as it happened 150 years ago. It makes it even more intresting.
