The book is a little hard to read as the author switches time frames and goes back and forth between general storytelling to a memoir fictionally written by Mother Suzanne Ravenel. It is well worth finishing though once started to understand what the author is trying to reveal and to come full circle with the fictional character, Mother Ravenel. This is a book about relationships, betrayal, and loyalty.

Unfinished Desires is a fairly long book - seems even longer than it is due to the numerous repetitions of the same event by different characters. There are time shifts to enhance the readers' understanding of an event that profoundly affected everyone concerned. Gail Godwin writes very well, but - in my opinion - this is far from her best book.
