A very interesting read. It is surprising how events played out for these young girls. They were put in very precarious and dangerous circumstances. It is a testament to people helping people regardless of the language barriers. It is also a testament to the recklessness of youth. It is funny, but it is also somewhat tragic.

Enjoyed reading about the travel adventures, especially having recenlty traveled to China myself. The book is written in a way, which makes it read as a novel. The two met quite a few interesting people during their journey who made some lasting impressions. Well worth the read, especially if you're a traveler.

Yet another travel memoir that is FAR superior to Eat, Pray, Love. Having traveled to China in 1984 (with my husband and two young children), many of the impressions and challenges faced by the author were familiar even though we were staying in 4-star hotels. Today it is often teens who embark on travel adventures...this book is a cautionary tale for parents and young people alike. It is also a testament to the willingness of strangers to help one another in times of need.

The adventures of two college friends in China. Almost scary the things they went through. Loved it.

Two girls who really don't know what they're getting into get into really deep. Travel in Communist China in 1986 was not easy, especially when you're ill prepared for it. Names were changed to protect the innocent, but this is a true story. I would love to know what happened to both girls later, but still an engrossing read.
