First, fabulous! Would read the story of their whole lives, even if they could somehow turn out ordinary at some point. Love the characters. The book was a "painted sky" with so many details.

This is a well-written YA book...with one exception: the romance felt incredibly forced. (And I generally like a romantic element!) I enjoyed the trail stories, and the descriptions of life on the Oregon Trail. Sometimes the race issue was a bit heavy-handed, but I think that was part of the point.
It really feels like this is the first book in a series, as one of the main themes is pointedly unresolved at the end of the book. I may or may not read a sequel.

A story about two young girls escaping from very different yet tragic circumstances. An easy book to read in one day, it was OK, but in many ways predictable. Recommended for 15-16 or older if not adults, not for younger teens
