This book is not for the faint of heart; it relays the story of a truly terrifying fire that swept across several towns in Minnesota in the late 1800s. Some things described in this book are completely out of the range of my imagination: 1000 foot tall walls of flame, horizontal tornadoes of fire rolling across the countryside, and stumbling upon dozens of bodies charred beyond recognition.

But beyond the lurid descriptions, the book is a good commentary on heroism, the changing face of fire/weather science in America, and what happens when the power of industry gets out of hand.

Ditto what the previous reviewer said, "This book is not for the faint of heart." The books narrative follows people fleeing - successfully and unsuccessfully - from a firestorm that raged across Northern Minnesota. I was "name-dropping" this one to my fellow Minnesotans weeks after I read it. Really got my adrenaline pumping.
