Kate Wilhelm out did herself with this book. The plot was more complex than her past books, which had me engrossed throughout the book. I highly recommend this book.

I found this to be a very interesting read. There was a lot to keep track of, but the story itself was very good.

Oregon lawyer, Barbara Holloway, takes the case of a young woman accused of murder. The young woman can't remember her childhood and is having haunting nightmares about a little girl. This story has a complex and thought provocing plot.

My mother in law is the one who read this, and she said she didn't usually like mysteries, but loved this one! She couldn't put it down. Fun reading about a story that takes place in the city right where we live, Eugene, Oregon.

The large retainer offered by a client who asks for complete anaonymity is not the only thing that intrigues Barbara Holloway. The defendant, Carol Frdricks, is a gifted young pianist charged with killing the manager of a piano bar. But Carol is as much of a mystery as the details of the murder for which she is accused. She can't remember anything about her life before the age eight, and she has been having haunting nightmares about a woman she cannot identify.
Before long Barbara becomes convinced that her client is not only innocent, but is being framed by an enemy who will stop at nothing to keep the past buried. And as she reveals the stunning trail of deception, hatred and a remarkable abiding love that holds the key to the mystery of Carol Fredricks, Barbara discovers that the unbidden truth may just damn them both.

The story isn't bad but I was intensely bothered by the neatness of it all. "Oh my," one character would say, "we need a security man. Who could we possibly trust?"

Then another character would suddenly "remember" a whizz at home security and lo and behold that person could make it the next day!

I believe in the right of the author to do this, I just find it implausible. To me the implausible is the kiss of death in a mystery novel.

A multi-layered courtroom drama with a cast of characters for whom it is easy to care. Even the watchdog is loveable, though efficient at his job. I want to get the preceding books in the series, although this stands alone as one of the best books I have read recently.

I could not put this book down and ignored my chores and family until I finished the last chapter. Out of all the Barbara Holloway series by Kate Wilhelm, this is far the best. Barbara Holloway solves a twenty year old murder case when she realizes her current client is somehow connected to the original murder case. The story is compelling and won't disappoint you.

If you like "Law & Order", "CSI" and/or any of the other numerous courtroom dramas, you'll love this book! I had my doubts at first, but Kate Wilhelm has won me over with the way she twists and turns the plot throughout the book.

This is one of my favorite Kate Wilhelm mystery/suspense novels. Barbara Holloway is back defending a young woman, Carol, who has no family, no money, and no memory of her life before the age of 8. Wilhelm does a terrific job weaving Carol's story into a larger, more sinister plot. Great book!
