ISBN 059025474x - Message books for children are almost always good, in one way or another. The Tyrone series is one of those, and does have some good points, but I'm not going to become a fan based on this particular book.

Boland is running low on friends, as all the kids in his class join the Swampies, a gang run by Tyrone, the class bully. Tyrone pressures Boland and his friends to join, but they resist. The Swampies play some practical jokes which backfire, causing Tyrone to suspect that someone's been squealing to principal B. C. Scatterbone. Finally, Tyrone takes his tricks one step too far, laying hot lava rocks outside the principal's front door. Knowing the danger to the principal, Boland wakes his friends to help him fix this before morning. Will Tyrone finally get what's coming to him?

Author Hans Wilhelms Tyrone series is a nice set of books about bullying and might help parents open up the conversation about this sort of problem. To me, the text rushes forward too quickly, right from the first page, leaving the reader to catch up, a bit blindly. Kids may not notice as much as an adult, but I can't help but find it annoying. The illustrations (no illustrator is listed, it may be Wilhelm) are excellent - they capture the story perfectly, ranging from a quiet conversation in the forest with little detail and solemn faces, to the Swampies' attack on the principal's house that is dark and somewhat chaotic. I couldn't help but notice that the Swampies' bandannas are very similar to the ones worn by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - but they're bright pink, which hardly makes them look threatening!

ISBN 0590414720 Tyrone the Horrible appears to be the first in the series, if you're interested in starting at the beginning, although it's not strictly necessary since each book stands alone.
