About friendships that aren't typical and being your own person. I loved that the main character was a dragon. It really is a cute story about a family of dragons who are excited for Crispin to start breathing fire. When the day comes it doesn't happen and that leads to interesting events and an unexpected friendship. I like the message of the story about being needed even when your abilities are different than expected or at first desired.
This is from Dolly Parton's Imagination library, and I find they are always good books. This one would make a great read aloud, because it often says, before you turn the page, "but fire didn't come out", giving listeners a chance to guess.
