When I started reading this book, I was worried I was going to be horribly disappointed because by page 50 it still hadn't grabbed me and I was fairly disturbed over the relationship between two main characters. As much as I have loved the earlier books, I think the series has run its course because sometimes it feels like Piers has developed burn-out and just keeps repeating the same tired jokes/puns over and over again.
I must be getting old or something because the punned named calling in this book has gotten old. It's like every character has the same bad attitude after awhile. A couple of times was fine, but it was done so often that it was like the author was trying to fill pages by using a lot of these little quips. It also feels like he's not even trying to be creative anymore and is so intent on getting all of the reader suggestions (some really lame ones at that) given their mentions that it's just not the same as when a person started reading these books.
There's also too many uses of "bleep" & and over-do of the adult conspiracy stuff. I really miss when the stories weren't filled with sex. And I do mean sex. They get it on in this one more than a lot of romance books that I've read!
I felt the relationship between Cyrus and Rhythm was just wrong. I just don't like having to read about a lot of sex going on between and adult and 12-year-old. Sure, she uses an age spell to age her 10 years for an hour just so they can do it, but it still creeps me out. A remark by one of the characters is that every writer puts themselves in the lead role. Well, apparently Piers is having some really inappropriate pedophile-like thoughts. Yuck!
Overall, I had to push myself to finish this book because I wanted to know what was going on in Xanth, but I have no plans on wasting my money buying a first edition in the future.

Normally I am glued to his Xanth series novels. This one took me a lot longer to get through. I felt like I was reading much the same as before, with little new developments. I don't know... maybe I was not too thrilled by a 12 year old character that takes a decade spell to be temporarily 22, signals the stork with the adult male main character, and has a kid delivered. Nevermind the fact that the "couple" are repeat offenders. It almost appeared to say... if they look and act like an adult, that's ok. It all works out in the end, but is shadowed with a creepy feel.

I enjoyed this book as I do all Xanth books. This one did not engage me as much as some of the other ones. I did enjoy the storyline, and the changes in Xanth. I think maybe he overdid some of the Adult Conspiracy stuff.
It is a good story, and typical Xanth book. Quick read!
