This book is absolutely horrible. I threw it in the trash. It did not need to be put back into circulation. I recevied this book before I knew that it was required reading for an adoption course from the state. I am absolutely appalled that the state would provide such rubbish to prospective adoptive families. It is completely discouraging and absolutely coercive. I've never read a book about adoption that made me want to rethink my whole desire to have a child through adoption like this book does. I made it halfway through before I put it down and looked up reviews on Amazon. The negative reviews were mostly written by adoptees themselves.
The negativity toward this book made me realize that I'm not "wrong" in thinking the way I do about adoption. This book basically can be summed up by saying that adopted children will grieve forever and adoptive parents can do nothing about it. They will never be able to properly love and care for the adopted child...no matter how young.
This book is appalling, don't get it. If you have it, burn it.

This was required reading for an adoption and is often listed on adoption reading lists. It was informative but I didn't get too many "gems" out of it. Several thought provoking times, though.
