When the Rugrats find out that their new friend might become dinner, they try to help him escape -- only their plans don't quite work! Their garbled misinterpretations of the things they hear are half the fun and their inept, uncertain parents are equally hilarious
Everyone gathers at the Pickles house to celebrate Thanksgiving, aka Hanks Giving in Rugrat-speak. Stu and Drew are going all out to make sure they don't miss one moment of football, Angelica and Grandpa Boris watch the parade while Tommy, Phil and Lil learn about the holiday from Didi and play "Nakie Americans". All seems normal, until Grandpa Lou comes home from shopping for a turkey. Instead of buying the bird, he's won one - and it will be delivered by four! Most of the adults rush out to the store, leaving the kids alone with a snoozing Grandpa Boris when a delivery man shows up with the turkey Lou won. It's alive! The kids decide to invite him to dinner and pursue him until Angelica informs them that the bird is going to BE dinner. They change their approach and try to convince the turkey to flee before it's too late. Hilarity ensues, everything that can go wrong does go wrong... but the turkey survives and everyone learns, or remembers, what Thanksgiving is really about.
Rugrats always have that feel of being pretty accurate about the viewpoint of a toddler, with their ears picking up everything but their brains not quite processing it correctly, which may be one reason they're still fan favorites. Parents will appreciate the message that gets tucked neatly into the story, without being preachy, and the short story about the first Thanksgiving on the last page. Kitty Richards, who adapted the TV show to book form, did an excellent job of staying true to the characters and storyline and the illustrations by Ed Resto are almost lifted right from the series. Absolutely worth sharing with your children!
