First in a planned series featuring FBI Special Agent Kelly Stone and her partner Roger Morrow. "Tunnels" finds Stone & Morrow investigating the serial killings of students at a prestigious New England college, their bodies found in the tunnels under the campus with strange symbols painted around them. The need to find the killer takes on a new urgency after another student is taken shortly after the agents' arrival.
Though not the most original or complicated plot, the characters are smart, the author avoids most of the cliches that can hamper female lead characters in this genre, and there's a nice mentor / father type relationship between Stone and Morrow. Fans of the show Criminal Minds will like this one as it has the same race-against-the-clock tension / feel to the investigation.

The surprising involvement of Jake Riley, a former FBI agent no head of security of one of the victims father, in her investigations doesn't help either but word is, that Riley has to be involved in whatever happens in the investigations.
When more girls and suspects die, Kelly receives an invitation to follow the killer into the tunnels alone. Pressured to at least rescue the latest kidnapped girl she begins her descent.

I'm not impressed at all with this debut novel. In fact I'm happy to have finished it. The story is quite old and has been written a hundred times. Lacking new additions to the plot and main characters that just fell flat without much personality, this book feels like a timer filler that you pick up during commercials or while waiting in the doctor's office.
Don't get me wrong, the last third had a bit more excitement and the book got better but the ending came as expected: very unsuccessful and unimaginative.
Having the second novel of this series somewhere in my pile I'm tempted to give it away without even looking at it.

Not the best thriller i have ever read, but not the worst. It has a boring start, uninteresting characters, and a slow developing plot. But about half-way thru it picks up and the chase begins. The three main characters are more likable at this point but the killer is revealed a little to soon for my liking and the end just leaves you hanging like a door shut in your face. This seems to be the first in a series starring FBI Agent Kelly Jones, hope the next installment is better.

I seem to be on a serial killer jag. At a small Northeast college female students have been found murdered, in the old tunnel system underneath the schools grounds. Enter FBI special agent Kelly Jones and her partner Roger Morrow, assigned to try and find the killer before he strikes again.. In addition former FBI Agent Jake Riley is now a private investigator, hired by the father of one of the victims, and Jake isn't bound by the same rules as the FBI team. Nicely done, very good pacing, plausible suspects and good lead characters. The banter and respect between Kelly and her partner rings true, and although there is a hint of attraction between Kelly and Jake, it doesn't overwhelm the mystery or the suspense. I plan on reading Boneyard the next Kelly Ryan book, due this July.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, I finished The Tunnels by Michelle Gagnon. This was another book obtained through Harlequin's Suspense club and frankly, I was surprised to note that although there was a hint of attraction between two of the characters, there was no flat out romance. Kind of disappointing when the genre of book that eHarlequin.com is famous for is romance, but this particular club doesn't promise specifically romance books, so I guess it's not that bad after all.
When a serial killer strikes a college, the students become terrified and rightly so. Gruesome pictures are painted in blood, and each victim is being taken quicker than the last. Add in a mental case, a priest with a frightening connection to the killer, and you've got an awesome story. I definitely recommend this one.
