"The Ten Commandments are not, the authors say, guidelines for humanity in general. No--they are a countercultural way of life for a certain people to know a certain God, the God of Jesus Christ. Their function is to produce a people who are, in our daily lives, a sign, a signal, a witness that God has not left the world to its own devices.
What truth can we know of God and about God through the Ten Commandments? The truth about God is that our God can be worshiped only if we are also a people who have learned to be faithful in marriage, to tell the truth, to rest from work, not to steal.
Here is a God who speaks to us in simple, direct words we can understand, addressing us where we live, where we face real issues about property, sex and speech. The relationship between God and us is a relationship between a God who loves and a people who are loved enough to be told how, when and where to return that love. God, having been creative, faithful, and just, now gives us the means to act in the same way.
Popular authors Hauerwas and Willimon are at their best as they explore the overarching question: What does it mean for us and the way we behave when we realize some of the truth about God?"
