Wonderful series. Completely different from anything else I've read.

characters are great! Joe Pickett being the game warden gets involved in nearly everything when it falls in his jurisdiction and his family is great. another good story!
This is the 4th in the Joe Pickett series by C.J. Box. I have been reading these in order and I continue to find this to be one of the better mystery/thriller series out there. In this book, Pickett gets involved in some murders related to cattle and other animal mutilations. He tries to find out who or what is doing the mutilations -- could it be aliens, deranged people, or birds as the FBI concluded in a similar series of mutilations in the 1970s? And how are the mutilations related to some land deals and mineral rights of land on the market? And why were two people killed in similar ways as the animal mutilations? Pickett finds his way through this morass but in the end leaves some unanswered questions. I would recommend this, along with the other books I have read in this series, although I didn't find this one quite as compelling as the first three books.

I am enjoying the Joe Pickett series of books by C.J.Box. And this latest one I read was pretty entertaining. This book however had one blaring mistake that the author uses to wrap up the conclusion of the book. This is a quote from later in the book: âWe've got bears, aliens, all sorts of bad ideas,â Joe said. âHell, somebody even claims he saw a couple of figures out in the alley behind your office awhile backâ.
âWho said that?â Cam asked.
Joe shrugged. âThat's not importantâ
The thing to notice is when Joe is asked who saw the two figures he replies that it isn't important. Later in the book Joe answers the question of how Cam would know who saw the two in the alley Joe replies âBecause I told him about it in his officeâ, then a few pages later Joe saiid âIt's because i told Cam that Not Ike said he had seen somebody in the alley.â
Having the character âCamâ know the identity of the person is crucial to the plot play-out but Joe never tells him the name (Not Ike).
Other than this flaw in the plot line the book is pretty good, I'd recommend reading the series in order because some of the character interaction and references are sometimes taken for granted and it is pretty important to know the background of the people to understand their actions.

I am so sorry that I've just started this series at this point. A friend of mine told me about them but it wasn't until I saw the first in the series on Paramount plus that I got hooked. I've seen/read the first 4 books in the series and I am addicted. The character development is just great and the plot unfolds so well that it's hard to put the book down. Joe Pickett is a very likeable character as are the members of his family. I love these books and even though they are mysteries, they are very unique! Highly recommend....
WOW a top notch ride all the way to the last page, was a busy week and that's all I could think about was getting back to this barn burner of a book!! OK I am hooked on C.J. Box now and was already warmed up to his main character's Joe Pickett, his family, and the locals after the first in the series (this being the 4th in the Joe Pickett series). He has given us great depth to his characters and I am enjoying his riveting stories involving them and other great characters of Saddlestring, WY. This one got you right from the beginning as gruesome things are turning up for Joe Pickett the game warden. First while him and his daughters are fly fishing they find the dead body of a mutilated moose, who had part of his body surgically altered after his grisly death. Soon cattle and then humans turn up along the way. The book leave's you with a lot of questions and to your own conclusions which I like in a top notch mystery. This one will send chills right down your spine and make your neck prickly on occasion adding a little flair on a late night of reading. What a great ride all the way to the end to unlock this one, and still leaves you with a few speculations for you to think on your own. I won't give it away, but have to say this one in the series was an awesome book, having me turning the pages as fast as I could to get to the grisly end.

Fourth in the Joe Pickett, Wyoming game warden series. Pickett comes across a dead moose, bizarrely mutilated, and then hears about a number of cattle killed the same way. Cows are not in his jurisdiction but, being Joe Pickett, he checks it out anyway. But then a local ranch hand is found dead with disturbing similarities, and before he knows it Pickett is on the task force to investigate the killings. Despite a huge boom in the oil & gas industry of the area, the killings are depressing local land prices, there's a weird alien abduction conspiracy theorist lurking about - but the FBI claims it could be birds and everyone else wants it to be a grizzly bear. Joe might be the only guy around who wants to know the real truth, and he's going to find it. These are always fast-paced and enjoyable. I liked that Joe doesn't make any bone-headed moves in this one; he comes to some erroneous conclusions, but doesn't end up wearing his own handcuffs. There's some 'woo-woo' bits this time, and not everything is explained fully, makes it a little different.
